Sound beginnings

Otoacousticemissions
This is an initial hearing screening performed on all infants born at Medcenter One. A probe is placed in the ear canal in order to record an echo from the inner ear.

A baby born with any sort of hearing loss is at risk of not having normal language development. The Sound Beginnings Program was started to discover and treat hearing loss. The sooner it is noticed, the fewer long term problems the child will have.

Newborns are screened for hearing loss with different tests which help to evoke responses from the baby. The tests are safe and are given while the baby sleeps. Even with the slightest concern, follow-ups are always recommended.

Hearing development checklist:

0—4 months
Startles to sudden loud sounds. Quiets to the sound of a familiar voice.

4—6 months
Turns toward a familiar or new sound. Likes rattles and toys that make sounds.

6—12 months
Turns or looks up when called by name. Imitates sounds and pitches. Understands the meaning of no and"bye-bye. Uses voice to get attention.

12—18 months
Uses four to five words by 18 months. Points to at least one body part when asked. Understands one step directions, such as get your diaper.

18—24 months
Uses 10—15 words by age two. Likes music. Points to familiar objects when named. Puts two words together by age two.

24—36 months
Use two to three word sentences by age three. Vocabulary of about 300 words.
