The Medcenter One radiology department is a full-service imaging department which includes general radiography, computerized tomography (cat scan), diagnostic ultrasonography, interventional studies and computerized nuclear imaging.

Direct digital radiology

A direct digital radiology (DR) X-ray unit uses a detector that digitizes the X-ray image and captures that direct digital image to a monitor. These images are seen on the monitor within seconds. The image can then be sent to a printer or server for permanent storage. The advantage of DR is time efficiency of almost instantaneous viewing of the image.

The digital image can then be viewed and enhanced using software that has functions very similar to conventional image-processing software, such as contrast, brightness and zoom. The image can also be viewed by doctors using the web distribution system on any personal computer throughout Medcenter One’s campus and clinics.

Computed radiology

X-rays are exposed in the same way as conventional X-rays, however an imaging plate is used in the place of film. The computed radiology (CR) cassette containing the imagine plate is then placed in a digital reader. In less than a minute, the image is viewed on a monitor then sent to a printer or server for permanent storage.

The digital image can be viewed and enhanced using software that has functions very similar to conventional image-processing software, such as contrast, brightness and zoom. The image can also be viewed by doctors using the web distribution system on any personal computer throughout Medcenter One’s campus and clinics.

Image web distribution

All images (except mammography) are in digital format and stored in a short-term archive. Advantages of image web distribution:

Provides instant and simultaneous access to medical images by doctors and other support staff.
Access to images from any in-house computer or secured remote computer via web browser.
Remote consultation opportunities from another provider.
Improved communication and timeliness.
Reduced interpretation time by radiologist.
Ability to manipulate views (i.e. contrast, brightness, magnification) which reduced the need to retake film.
